About Us

The Closet is a non-profit thrift store in Herndon, VA, founded in 1974 by a group of faith-based congregations. Today, we proudly collaborate with 20 participating congregations, which you can find listed on our Member Congregations page.

Our core mission is to provide high-quality used clothing, household items, and more at very affordable prices.

After covering our expenses, we distribute the profits as grants to local non-profits that directly or indirectly support low-income families in Fairfax and Loudoun counties. We also offer scholarships through six local high schools for graduating seniors pursuing post-secondary education. Additionally, we provide clothing and household items at no cost to families and individuals referred by local social services organizations in Fairfax and Loudoun Counties.

The Closet of the Greater Herndon Area is founded on a fundamental set of values and beliefs, which we are committed to upholding. These values state that The Closet believes in the inherent dignity of all human life and will serve everyone regardless of race, gender, religion, national origin, disability, sexual preference, marital status, or any other legal category. We cherish our ability to provide our services to Herndon’s diverse community in alignment with these principles.
